Imperial Beach Eats - Best Beach Tacos

Imperial Beach hosts a humble little joint called IB STREET TACOS which serves up tortilla-wrapped rainbows of flavor.

Two Scoops’ Dad Steve - a self-proclaimed foodie - first found this gem on our last trip to Imperial Beach.  We returned this year and were not disappointed!

Located just off Sea Coast Drive in downtown Imperial Beach, IB STREET TACOS is a great option for a quick bite for not a lot of dough.

The humble menu starts off with the Adobada (slow-roasted pork in a chili adobo rub,) followed by Carnitas (tender shredded pork), and Asada (traditional Mexican grilled steak) - each offered at $2.25/taco.  Feeling like chicken?  The Pollo Asado is a flavorful grilled chicken breast which can also be enjoyed for $2.25.  The Portobello Taco is a stunning vegetarian option consisting of portobello mushroom, arugula, black beans, poblano chile, and corn and cilantro aioli and cotija cheese over a grilled cheese tortilla for $3.25. Tacos are served with guacamole, onions and cilantro on a soft corn tortilla (or flour upon request).

IB STREET TACOS also offers some tasty seafood options starting with the Pescado, a mildly-spicy  taco stuffed with battered Swai fish, cabbage, onion, cilantro, tomato, chipotle aioli and IBST’s own house aioli for $2.25.  The Battered Shrimp is another tasty option served up IB style at $3.25.  Gluten free options also include the Camaron Enchilado, a spicy morsel served with grilled shrimp, and Pulpo al Pesto, a pesto-laced grilled octopus, both for $3.25.

IBST continues to bring a taste of Mexico with their Mulitas.  Any taco can be upgraded to a Mulita, a traditional Mexican hand-made tortila sandwich taco with cheese and a protein of your choice for $3.50-$4.50.

IB STREET TACOS serves up a handful of tasty sides including Grilled Cebollitas (grilled green onions), Chiles Toreados (grilled serrano chiles), and for your Cheese-atarians, a cheese quesadilla.  Two Scoops’ Dad Steve is addicted to IBST’s corn on the cob.  These full-size cobs come coated in mayo and rolled with a cotija cheese and chili concoction that is sure to please.

GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS

For our gluten free tween, Sydney, everything here that is not battered can be served up gluten free thanks to the corn tortillas and fresh ingredients.  Of course, this is a tiny kitchen so cross-contamination could be an issue - so just keep that in mind.

This taco-licious hideaway often has a line, but not to fear, it moves briskly.  There is limited seating, and by limited I mean 14 seats.  The night we were there we scored the window bar seats.  IB’s Dune Park is across the street so a fun option is to take your tacos to go and enjoy them surf-side.

IB STREET TACOS is our family’s favorite place for tacos in Imperial Beach.  We continue to be impressed with the chef’s insistence on fresh ingredients, flavorful combinations and tacos cooked to order.  Honest food at honest prices - what’s not to like!
