RESTAURANT REVIEW: Trattoria al Forno

Trattoria al forno at Disney's Boardwalk Resort

Bongiorno!  Take a break from the Disney Hustle and enjoy some authentic, old-world Italian classics at Trattoria al Forno in Disney’s Boardwalk Resort.

There are many reasons we return to the Boardwalk area year after year.  It is a beautiful resort complex nestled beside Epcot and within a brisk walk from Hollywood Studios.  Even though the location is convenient, really it is the dining and entertainment options that make this a favorite  resort destination for our families.

Dining options, such as Trattoria al Forno, make the Boardwalk a must-visit destination.

OVERVIEW

Trattoria al Forno sits snugly among the Boardwalk’s shops, just a few steps from the Friendship Boat Launch.  It’s location makes Trattoria a nice dinner option while visiting either Epcot or Hollywood.  (Although, Epcot has 2 tasty Italian joints - Via Napoli and Tutto Italia Ristorante - so unless you are not able to get reservations in the park, we wouldn’t recommend leaving Epcot just to visit Trattoria).

Once inside, guests are welcomed to a warm, Italian family eatery.  Transitional Italian design makes Trattoria comfortable but not kitschy.  The open kitchen adds a modern element to the restaurant and it’s fun for all ages to watch the skilled chefs hard at work.

Dinner service is a traditional restaurant setting.   Guests can also choose start their day at Trattoria’s Bon Voyage Breakfast.  Tired of eating with just your family?  Then swing down to Trattoria and have breakfast with Rapunzel and  Flynn Rider, Ariel and Prince Eric.  We have this on the list for next trip, but there’s a great review by the experts at Disney Food Blog:  Review of Trattoria al Forno.

MENU REVIEW

We visited Trattoria for dinner during our recent Spring Break visit to the Boardwalk Resort. We made reservations ahead for our multi-generational group.  We were sat in a large, comfy booth which was perfect for our group of 6.

Disclaimer:  We are far from being professional food bloggers!  For a true foodie review, check out the true professionals at the Disney Food Blog.  However, we were able to enjoy a few dishes, the wine, and experienced the allergy-friendly menu, so we will share our thoughts on that.

Trattoria has a diverse menu with options that should satisfy even the pickiest eater in your group.

We were also surprised at the variety of offerings on their Allergy-Friendly menu.  One of our tweens, Sydney, has celiac disease and is usually left picking at a salad at most Italian restaurants.  Trattoria offered her so much more - she could enjoy almost everything (except the lasagna).  We managed to snap a pic of the Allergy-Friendly menu as of March 2018 - so get ready to drool!

FOOD QUALITY

In a single word, Trattoria’s food was DELICIOUS.  Everyone loved it.

My seafood-loving foodies devoured the Cozze Arrostite Antipasti.  One is GF - can you tell which one?  If it wasn’t for the allergy stick you’d have a hard time telling the two dishes apart. Sydney and Jayce talked about the mussels for weeks!

The GF dish came complete with a delightful GF bread roll ready for olive-oil-dipping.  A nice touch which made Sydney feel more included in the meal experience.

Our resident vegetarian tween enjoyed the kids pasta marinara - she loved this tasty non-meat-laced marinara.

Melissa savored the deep-dish Lasagna al Forno.  Now, Mel’s no stranger to lasagna, as this is her favorite Italian offering.  So it means something when she awarded Trattoria’s signature lasagna THE BEST EVER award.  We will see if it stands up to our upcoming trip to Italy!

 Disney Parks' Signature Pinot Grigio

Melissa also enjoyed Disney’s private label wine.  She possibly enjoyed the wine a little too much - which is why we didn’t get a pic of her delightful lasagna.

Grandma and Grandpa loved the Pasta alla Vongola and Polpetta.

VALUE: We think this is a great value on Disney property.  Food is fabulous but not too pricey.  Location is superb.  Disney park guests can easily access Trattoria from both Hollywood Studios and Epcot.  Trattoria is also easily accessible to Disney hotel guests staying at Boardwalk, Beach Club, Yacht Club, Swan and Dolphin.

KIDS:  The regular lunch and dinner menu have a solid kids’ menu with expected classics. Little extras, like the Tinker Bell and Buzz Lightyear light-up cups, make every meal a little more special.  Yes, it costs more.  But it will entertain the kids for at least 15 minutes, which in our book is worth the extra cost!  (Buzz and Tink will also reappear in your hotel room after dark!!)

 Trattoria al Forno's kid-friendly offerings

For a truly kid-friendly experience, book the character breakfast and kill 2 birds with one stone!

RESERVATIONS:  Easy to book, although reservations are recommended.  Click here to make reservations on Disney's website.

INSIDER TIPS:  Servers are very knowledgeable about food and wine and we enjoyed their recommendations.  For food allergy sufferers -  just talk with your server and they will be happy to find a dish that will make you happy.  This is where Disney’s customer service really excels. Trattoria serves Disney’s exclusive wine label along with an impressive list of Italian wines.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:  On a scale of 5, we would give Trattoria a solid 3 scoops.  The food is really delicious but more of a selection would be nice.   Also, having to leave the restaurant and go into the next-door bar (Abracadabra) to use the bathroom was a little off-putting for some of our guests.
